Editorial Review for Beaver Creek Ski Resort – by Seth Masia

The Scene
Combining Western hospitality with European charm, Beaver Creek is less intimidating than its corporate sister, Vail. Of course, there's no lack of luxe amenities, including heated cobblestone walkways, upscale galleries, day spas and fine dining.

The Slopes
Beaver Creek occupies a series of interlocking peaks and gullies. New skiers can noodle around on the easy Highlands and Haymarket lifts at the bottom of the mountain, but it's more fun to ride straight to the top. Two summit lifts, Stump Park and Drink of Water, serve mainly novice and low-intermediate runs. Expert action lies between Centennial and Larkspur. The centerpiece: the thrilling Birds of Prey downhill course, designed specifically for the 1999 World Alpine Championships.

Vital Stats
Vertical drop: 4,040 feet
Base elevation: 8,100 feet at Beaver Creek and Bachelor Gulch; 7,400 feet at Arrowhead
Top elevation: 11,440 feet
Number of trails: 109 at Beaver Creek; 25 at Bachelor Gulch; 12 at Arrowhead
Skiable acres: 1,625
Beginner terrain: 34 percent
Intermediate terrain: 39 percent
Expert/Advanced terrain: 27 percent
Snowboarding: Facilities include two terrain parks and a half-pipe.
