Editorial Review for Telluride Ski Resort – by Lois Friedland

The Scene
There's a strange dichotomy at Telluride: The resort needs tourists in order to survive, yet the locals are overly protective, not wanting much exposure. Still, if you want to know what resorts were like before strip malls and six-lane highways, this old-time Western town is for you.

The Slopes
Telluride is a skier's mountain--no matter what skill level. Beginners have their own section of long, gentle trails off the Sunshine Express high-speed quad. Intermediates enjoy long, rolling runs such as See Forever, an aptly named cruising trail. Thanks to Telluride's grooming philosophy, half the crowd can cruise steep runs, such as the Plunge, while the rest can tackle the bumps. For an "expert skills" reality check, try Kant-Mak-M to Spiral Stairs, then ski to Lower Plunge and finally to Mine Shaft, tackling bumps, steeps and boulder-filled cuts through trees.

Insider Tips

The Extras

Take one of three high-speed quad lifts to Gold Hill, a ridge where hang gliders launch, for an extra few 100 feet of vertical. Get to the ridge early on a powder day; it'll be trashed by 9:45am.

When to Go

No night skiing. Half days begin at noon.

Very beautiful and very importantly not overly crowded or full of the snooty, name brand skiiers like in other places. Lift lines were fast and views are beautiful. The gondola takes you were you need to go. The only things I would warn is 1) this place is dog friendly but the owners are very lax at picking up after them. It was ridiculous how nasty it was with dog stuff everywhere, even near the ski lifts. That is the one thing that would make me not want to come back. 2) this is not a place for beginners. Even the slopes designated for beginners and advanced beginners are steep and have drop offs on the side. Telluride is for people that are good skiiers and have no fear. Best restaurants we went to are La marmotte and La Piazza and Skiers Union is good for burgers.

Pros: Gondola, no lines, very pretty

Cons: Dog poo everywhere

I've skied Telluride for the last 7yrs, the terrain is great, the groomed trails for lesser-experienced skiers are great and the expert runs will blow you away. Town side slopes will burn your legs, 3000' of bumps - yeehhaa! Town is easy to get around, lots of places to eat, "BAKED IN TELLURIDE" breakfast croissants a must.

Pros: no lines...ever, snow conditions, fast lifts, long runs

Cons: , hard to get to
